Accounts are a summary of the income and expenses that a business has in a year.
Accounts can also show the items owned by the business and whether the business owes money to other people.
Most businesses prepare accounts so that the person who owns the business can tell how much they are earning.
Accounts are also useful for self-employed businesspeople to prove their income, for example when applying for a mortgage or business finance.
HMRC require businesses to keep accounts so that they can calculate the amount of tax they owe and prepare tax returns to report this.
Most businesses that trade through a company also have to prepare accounts to file with Companies House. This is so that other people trading with the business can get some more information on the company before they buy or sell to it.
We prepare accounts and tax returns for companies and for businesses that do not trade through a company, taking care of all of the information they need to run their business.

You do not have to use an accountant to prepare or file a tax return, but it helps to make sure your entries are right because they are trained and experienced. HMRC can sometimes investigate a tax return years after it was filed, so it’s more reassuring to have a professional accountant help you with it.
Qualified accountants have to pass exams in order to practise, and they also have to keep up to date with changes in tax rules. That means they are more likely to be able to tell you if the entries on your tax return are right.
It is safest to choose an accountant who is qualified with one of the main professional bodies (ICAEW, ACCA, CIOT) because they have to comply with higher professional standards. They are also required to have professional indemnity insurance, which gives clients more protection.
Local firms can be as good as national firms because it is the qualification that counts. Often, the members of local firms will have trained in much larger firms which means they are just as experienced and professional as their counterparts.
Qualified accountants have passed professional exams to earn their qualification. The main professional bodies (ICAEW, ACCA, CIOT) also require their members to prove they are up to date with changes in tax and accounting rules each year.
Accountants who are not qualified with the main professional bodies may not have as much training or experience, and may not be bound by the same code of ethics. They can still call themselves an accountant even if they have no training, which is sometimes confusing. That means it is best to do your research before you choose an accountant.
