Most business owners need to complete a tax return every year.
Tax returns are the forms that taxpayers use to tell HMRC how much income they received in a year, and how much tax they owe.
Tax returns are submitted through Self-Assessment, which is the system for filing a tax return and paying your tax if you are a business owner.
We are trusted with preparing Self-Assessment tax returns for a number of clients and businesses in Salisbury and the surrounding area.

Self-Assessment is the system that HMRC use to record and tax income received by self-employed people. It also lets people tell HMRC about income they have earned from property rental, investments and other sources that are not taxed automatically, so you do not have to be self-employed to use it.
It is called ‘Self-Assessment’ because you have to declare your income yourself. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to work out whether they need to register or not.
The deadline for registering for Self-Assessment is 5 October after the tax year in which you started earning the income you need to declare. You then have until the following 31 January to send the return to HMRC.
See the link in the following section for HMRC's tool to decide whether you need to file a tax return.
Tax returns are the forms that taxpayers use to tell HMRC how much income they have earned in a tax year.
You usually need to file a tax return if you have income to declare that has not already been taxed, for instance business profits. Not all income is taxable, and some amounts can be declared without needing to file a return.
HMRC provide a tool to help you decide if you need to file a tax return, which is here:
You can correct mistakes on tax returns that have already been filed. For recent mistakes, you can file an amended return.
For older mistakes, you usually need to use HMRC’s disclosure service. This lets you explain to HMRC what you think you have done wrong and gives you the opportunity to pay any extra tax.
HMRC can charge penalties and interest if they think a mistake has caused them a loss of tax that was due to them.
